Our Story

Decades before the “clean beauty” movement, Emilie was inspired to take her cues from nature. As a young girl, Emilie suffered from debilitating migraines, sometimes so bad they would visually impair her sight. When medical experts were unable to provide relief, Emilie rolled up her sleeves, deciding to take her remedy into her own hands. Digging into extensive research, she became awakened to the idea that her personal care products were most likely the culprits behind her migraine activation.

Of the hundreds of alarming findings from her research, one disingenuous and dangerous “ingredient” stood out among the rest: synthetic fragrance, otherwise known as toxic, petroleum-based compounded chemicals that are permitted to be used in 95% of beauty products. It was then that Emilie made it her life mission to make natural and safe products accessible to people looking to feel the very best they can in their own skin. Emilie channeled her passion for wellness and aromatherapy into LATHER, and opened the brand’s first store in Pasadena, CA in 1999.

Our Promise

At LATHER, we’ve pledged from the very beginning to never use synthetic fragrance in any of our products. But we aren't stopping there. We are 100% committed to educating our community on the fragrance industry's secrets. We believe you have a right as a consumer to know exactly what’s going on your skin. We work hard, using advanced resources and technology, to bring you, our community, products that make you feel real in your own skin.

Synthetic fragrance is a man-made scent that's generally created in a lab, often using toxic chemicals, such as phthalates, petroleum and natural gas byproducts. Yep, you read that right.

If you take a cursory glance at the personal care products in your bathroom, you'll notice a majority of them have “fragrance” listed as an ingredient. That's because 95% of the beauty industry still uses synthetic fragrance, despite its harmful health implications and blatant dangers.

Even scarier? The fragrance industry is entirely self-regulated. It undergoes absolutely zero federal regulation. Translated, this means when a brand lists the blanket term “fragrance” on a product, it's legally protected from having to disclose the ingredients.

All LATHER products do not contain artificial colors or fragrances.

LATHER products do not contain several ingredients of concern that are commonly used in cosmetics. These include Parabens, Sulfates, Synthetic Fragrance, Synthetic Color, Synthetic Flavor, Phthalates, Mineral Oil, Petrolatum, Formaldehyde Releasers (for example, DMDM Hydantoin, Diazolidinyl Urea), DEA, TEA, BHA/BHT, Microbeads/Polyethylene, Oxybenzone, Methylisothiazolinone, and Methylochloroisothiazolinone.

LATHER does not test on animals nor will we work with labs that conduct animal testing. We are a proud member of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) and are listed in their annual Shopping Guide for Caring Consumers. We are also certified cruelty-free by Leaping Bunny.

All LATHER products are 100% vegan and ethically sourced.

Letter from the Founder

“There’s no clean beauty without transparency and that includes fragrances. At LATHER, we are committed to the education behind our ingredient choices but most importantly our decision to use zero synthetic fragrances in our products and we urge other brands to do the same.”

Warm Wishes,

Emilie D. Hoyt
